KWAME SOUSA, ONE OF THE MAIN VISUAL ARTISTS OF SÃO TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE

Com pouco mais de 40 anos de idade, Kwame Sousa é um dos principais nomes das artes visuais de São Tomé e Príncipe. Artista multidisciplinar, começou sua carreira estimulado por amigos pouco antes de entrar para universidade, e em 2000, aos 20 anos, já tinha trabalhos expostos em uma galeria de arte local.

A little over 40 years old, Kwame Sousa is one of the main names in the visual arts of São Tomé and Príncipe. A multidisciplinary artist, he started his career stimulated by friends shortly before entering university, and in 2000, at the age of 20, he already had works exhibited at a local art gallery.

2001 foi um ano decisivo para o artista. Após participar do projeto da II Bienal de Artes de São Tomé e Príncipe, começou um período de descobertas em que conviveu com inúmeros artistas, ampliou sua rede de contatos, participou de workshops e desenvolveu muitas das suas técnicas e amadureceu sua própria linguagem artística. Pouco tempo depois, em 2003, iniciou sua formação acadêmica em Portugal, participou de inúmeras exposições em várias partes do mundo e, em 2014, participou da Bienal de Arquitetura de Veneza e do Festival de Cinema de Lisboa com o vídeo Mionga House, realizado em colaboração com a artista Rene Tavares, um curta que lançava um olhar sobre a arquitetura colonial, e contemporânea e as implicações sócio-culturais na África lusófona.

2001 was a decisive year for the artist. After participating in the II São Tomé and Príncipe Arts Biennial project, he began a period of discovery in which he lived with numerous artists, expanded his network, participated in workshops and developed many of his techniques and matured his own artistic language. Shortly thereafter, in 2003, he began his academic training in Portugal, participated in numerous exhibitions around the world and, in 2014, participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Lisbon Film Festival with the video Mionga House, held in collaboration with artist Rene Tavares, a short film that looked at colonial and contemporary architecture and the socio-cultural implications in Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Hoje, reconhecido como um dos artistas visuais mais influentes da aualidade, usa seu prestígio em colaborações com o projeto “Casa das Artes Criação Ambiente e Utopia” (CACAU) e Fundação Roça Mundo, ambas em São Tomé e Príncipe, com a galeria “Zero Point Art” de Cabo Verde, e com o portal BUALA, dedicado à cultura dos países lusófonos.

Today, recognized as one of the most influential visual artists in the world, he uses his prestige in collaborations with the project “Casa das Artes Criação Ambiente e Utopia” (CACAU) and Roça Mundo Foundation, both in São Tomé and Príncipe, with the gallery “Zero Point Art” from Cape Verde, and with the BUALA portal, dedicated to the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries.

Além disso, Kwame criou a Fundação Mionga Vantxi e recentemente abriu a primeira escola de artes visuais de seu país, o Ateliê M – Escola Informal de Artes Visuais, totalmente financiada com recursos vindos das vendas de suas obras e que oferece formação gratuita por acreditar no potencial social e humano da arte, na capacidade do desenvolvimento da auto-estima e da identidade cultural e capacidade econômica, além de estimular o diálogo, o intercâmbio cultural.

In addition, Kwame created the Mionga Vantxi Foundation and recently opened the first visual arts school in his country, Ateliê M – Informal School of Visual Arts, fully financed with funds from the sales of his works and which offers free training for believing in social and human potential of art, in the capacity to develop self-esteem and cultural identity and economic capacity, in addition to stimulating dialogue, cultural exchange.
