Wozen Residency | Ricky Ferreira

In this convulsive moment of our existence, new resistance movements are beginning to gain momentum, driven by the climate emergency and a recent global sequence of attacks on individual rights won over generations. As Mark Twain points out: the story is not repeated, but often it rhymes. This collection allows us to immortalize in time the struggle for freedom during the counterculture movements of the 60s and 70s, which had many successes, but ended up suffocated by the dry individualism of the following decades.

Neste momento convulsivo de nossa existência, novos movimentos de resistência começam a ganhar força, impulsionados pela emergência climática e por uma recente sequência global de ataques a direitos individuais conquistados em outras gerações. Como bem aponta Mark Twain: a história não se repete, mas muitas vezes ela rima. Esta coleção nos permite imortalizar no tempo a luta pela liberdade durante os movimentos de contracultura dos anos 60 e 70, que tiveram muitos êxitos, mas terminaram sufocados pelo individualismo seco das décadas seguintes.

Wozen Exhibition | Space of Other

we are delighted to open the doors to present the site-specific art project " Space of Other " developed by our current resident artists Afaina de Jong and Innavision from NL.

Space of Other is a spatial installation by architect Afaina de Jong and artist Innavision that explores the relation between space and identity in the context of the gentrifying city. The installation mediates between the public spaces of the city, its interior spaces and its residents by being very much ‘Other’ in its perception.

Wozen Activity | What Will Remain?

After the bubble bursts, after the trend passes, when the spotlight shifts, when the honeymoon is over, when the speculators and the luxury-seekers and the digital nomads move on again to the next hot spot: what will remain for the rest of us?

In order to create a space for empathy, intimacy and unbiased conversation, Wozen is pleased to host the conference What Will Remain and invite the Lisbon community to join us on Thursday April 4th to talk about waht matters. Moderated by Joanna Hecker (historian of architecture and art, head of International Partnerships at the Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa, and co-founder of the Lisbon Living Room Sessions), these conversations will spark a collective reflection upon sustainability, waste, over-consumption, gentrification, standardization, and the loss of cultural identity. Wozen also open the doors for the last day of the exhibition "No Future Without Memory" -  developed by the artist duo from London Expanded Eye.

The conference is an attempt to highlight one of the strongest processes of urban change; the process of gentrification.  Gentrification materializes the struggle for the preservation of identity and memory of the community and brings a reflective look into a global mentality through the local perspective of Lisbon. For this conference, Wozen is delighted to invite our upcoming residents: architect Afaina de Jong and artist Inna Vision; to join the guest speakers: urban geographer Luis Mendes and Frame Colectivo.  

Exhibition | no future without memory

“In this fast-paced consumer driven modern world, as we sink deeper into the spectacle and grow ever more disconnected from a life of meaning, our natural environment, each other, and our own identity; ‘No Future Without Memory’ aims to evoke nostalgia and inspire us to take a step back. to think about how we impact our human environment and how this in turn affects us, and to question our values. To slow down and appreciate, to observe and reflect, to reconnect and change attitudes.

This project has opened our eyes to just how much waste urban ecosystems produce. A staggering amount of single use plastic as well as wood and furniture from building sites and domestic homes . An entire studio filled with trash and treasures in a short timeframe - almost all from the Santos area. With such rapid development in our throwaway society it has become abundantly clear that our way of thinking needs to change.

Wozen Residency | Expanded Eye

Oct 13th | 3-8pm

Open Studio: focus on process and feedback as the artists will present works in progress. We believe in a spontaneous and horizontal exchanges of ideas that arises from the personal and often unpredictable relations between artists, gallerists and the community involved in that particular project. An opportunity to follow up the artists process during their residency, therefore constructing a better understanding and a deeper connection to the artwork.

Open Studio é um enfoque ao processo e ao feedback uma vez que serão apresentadas obras não terminadas. Acreditamos em uma troca espontânea e linear de ideias que surge das relações pessoais e geralmente imprevisíveis entre os artistas, galeristas e a comunidade envolvida no projeto em questão. É uma oportunidade de conhecer o ponto de investigação dos artistas em residência, desmistificar seus processos, além de construir um entendimento e uma conexão mais profunda dos trabalhos expostos.

For the three-month residency at Wozen, Kevin James and Jade Tomlinson continue their investigation into the memory and identity of a given society at a given time, applying their efforts to the study of Lisbon and the growing socio-economic, environmental and technological pressures that distort the sense of private identity and gradually stifle the collective memory of a community.

Para a residência de três meses na Wozen, Kevin James e Jade Tomlinson continuam sua investigação pela memória e identidade de uma determinada sociedade em uma determinada época, aplicando seus esforços ao estudo de Lisboa e das crescentes pressões socioeconômicas, ambientais e tecnológicas que distorcem o senso de identidade particular e gradualmente sufocam a memória coletiva de uma comunidade. 

Z.U.T. Exhibition

'Bored but secured' is a group exhibition of eight international artists interested in responding to the theme of Utopia. The exhibition presents the result of a four-week residency at Wozen, where artists have worked together to create a Temporary Utopian Zone. Each work that has been produced considers central Utopian themes. The outcomes explore painting, drawing, sculpture, video and performance.

O programa de residência Zone d'Utopie Temporaire (Z.U.T.) é uma residência anual nômade que aborda a noção de utopia como um veículo para comentários artísticos e críticos. Iniciada pela curadora Alice Bonnot, a residência é um experimento social e criativo em que um grupo de artistas trabalha juntos durante quatro semanas para criar uma Zona Utopia Temporária.

The Zone d’Utopie Temporaire (Z.U.T.) residency programme is a nomadic annual residency which addresses the notion of Utopia as a vehicle for artistic and critical comment. Initiated by curator Alice Bonnot, the residency stands as a social and creative experiment whereby a group of artists work together during four weeks to create a Temporary Utopian Zone.

Para esta Residência de Primavera, a Wozen lança-se ao desafio de investigar um dos maiores paradigmas contemporâneos, a mobilidade humana, a migração internacional diante de um mundo em constante movimento, a aproximação das fronteiras devido ao avanço da tecnologia em contraste ao crescimento exponencial do número de refugiados e actos de extremismo.  

For this Spring Residence, Wozen launches itself to the challenge of investigating one of the biggest contemporary paradigms, human mobility and international migration, facing a world in constant movement. Including, the approximation of borders due to the development of technology in contrast to exponential growth of the number of refugees and acts of extremism.

The Absence of Awareness: Fluor, Concrete, Lava

For this exhibition, the artist explored his sub_movimentos, highlighting three important pillars: #Traumatism comes from the idea of trauma with the propose of recycling memory objects, making art with garbage, and thus address the issue of pollution and sustainability; #Magnetism: In that it uses logos, marks and references as cartoons to magnetically attract the eyes of the viewers, as a kind of necessary evil, to criticize the social immediacy; and #Imperfecionism: where the raw expression prevails through a genuine, childish and unfiltered trait. A critique on the desire for perfectionism of the contemporary world, the "perfect" life as a reference of success, creating a condition of competitive individualization and psychic isolation that provokes an extreme fragility and the increase of young people with a marked tendency to unhappiness.

Para esta exposição, o artista explorou seus sub_movimentos, destacando três importantes pilares: #Traumatismo onde engloba tudo quanto seja fazer arte com lixo, e assim abordar o tema da poluição e sustentabilidade; #Magnetismo: Em que utiliza logotipos, marcas e referências como cartoons para atrair magneticamente os olhos dos visualizadores, como uma espécie de mal necessário, para criticar o imediatismo social; e #Imperfecionismo: onde prevalece a expressão bruta através de um traço genuíno, infantil e sem filtros. Uma crítica ao perfeccionismo do mundo contemporâneo, a vida “perfeita” como referência de sucesso, originando uma condição de individualização competitiva e de isolamento psíquico que provoca uma extrema fragilidade e o aumento de jovens com uma acentuada “tendência à infelicidade”.

The Absence of Awareness: Fluor, Concrete, Lava

Binau gives birth to creatures we can relate and sympathize, because they are sarcastic portrays of his own particular thoughts, which are often shared by a large part of his generation. He is an artist brave enough to expose his darkest corners, but smart enough to never loose his good humor in the process. Just like his monsters, Binau is an outsider that never compromises to other peoples expectations. They can always find comfort and happiness within their uniqueness, a valluable lesson in these times of artificial digital lives and mass conformity.

Binau concede vida a criaturas que podemos relacionar e simpatizar, pois são retratos sarcásticos dos seus próprios pensamentos particulares, que muitas vezes são compartilhados por uma grande parcela de sua geração. Ele é um artista corajoso o suficiente para expor suas esquinas mais escuras, e inteligente o suficiente para nunca perder o bom humor no processo. Como seus monstros, Binau é um estranho que nunca compromete suas crenças frente às expectativas alheias. Eles conseguem sempre encontrar conforto e felicidade em sua singularidade, uma valiosa lição nestes tempos de vidas digitais artificiais e conformismo em massa.

The Absence of Awareness: Flúor, Concrete and Lava

For this exhibition the artist presents a work consisting of two installations that approach the concept of Interval | Distance that, in time or space, mediates between two things. Interval-temporal, procedural-interval and action-interval are the three notions that invite the viewer to question what is revealed and what is hidden in the painting, to speculate on the meaning that this manipulation of full and empty tells of the process and the pictorial intention or in videographic action.

 Joana works bring us a reflexive look into the a humanity condition of living in a constant war and the manipulation of information by the media, generating a continuous fear of a repressed / depressed population.

Para esta exposição a artista desenvolveu um trabalho que consiste em duas instalações que abordam o conceito de Intervalo | Distância que, no tempo ou no espaço, medeia entre duas coisas. Intervalo-temporal, intervalo-processual e intervalo-acção são as três noções que convidam o espectador a questionar o que é revelado e o que é ocultado na pintura, a especular sobre o significado que essa manipulação de cheios e vazios conta do processo e da intenção pictórica ou na acção videográfica.

Ambas instalações nos trazem grandes e profundas reflexões sobre uma humanidade em guerra constante, a manipulação de informação pela mídia gerando um medo contínuo diante de uma população reprimida/deprimida.

The Absence of Awareness: Fluor, Concrete, Lava

After its first Artistic Winter Residence, Wozen presents the exhibition result of an intense investigation about a specific generation, of the turn of the millenium, of the digital transition and the consecutive economic global crises. Through the collective expression of three Portugueses Binau, Joana Gomes and Salvador Salazar, represent a generation that comes to question patterns and bring us deep reflections and provocations. These real Lisbon street characters combine efforts for the first time in the same space, sharing their experiences, questions, traumas, fears, hopes, vices and memories.

Após sua primeira Residência Artística de Inverno, a Wozen apresenta a exposição fruto de uma intensa investigação em torno de uma geração específica, da virada do milênio, da transição digital e das crises econômicas globais consecutivas. Onde através da expressão conjunta de três artistas portugueses Binau, Joana Gomes e Salvador Salazar, representam uma geração que vem questionar padrões e nos trazem profundas reflexões e provocações. Os jovens artistas, personagens reais das travessas de Lisboa, uniram-se pela primeira vez neste espaço sem fronteiras para compartilhar as suas experiências, questionamentos, traumas, medos, esperanças, vícios e memórias.
